This scene opens with Apollo, one of the higher-ranking males sitting atop a hillside. Eating a sparrow, Apollo successfully chases off another male who has followed him. Apollo approaches Fanny, who is holding her infant Fudge. For reasons unknown, something had triggered an attack by Apollo that is quite vicious. Fanny actually drops Fudge during the attack, runs after Apollo, waits and rushes back to retrieve her infant. During chimp attacks, the attacked will run after the attacker screaming to solicit support. In this case, Fifi comes to help. Apollo approaches Fifi, who in turn pant-grunts, a typical submissive behavior. Even after submitting to him Apollo also attacks Fifi- in a sense “breaking the rules” of typical chimp behavior by attacking a chimp who is becoming submissive. The reasons for the attack on Fifi are suspected to be of a political nature- perhaps trying to get other males upset, thereby involving them in the attacks.

Apollo’s lashings end when Tubi- who is higher-ranking than Apollo comes in to stop the attacks- Apollo moves away. In the background we still hear what are known as post-attack wild calls by Fifi with Flirt. These calls are used to solicit support after an attack.
