Unit Three: Compassion
Arrow Purpose:
Compassion links the knowledge we have gained to the actions we want to take. Sometimes learning about the actions of other compassionate people gives us the inspiration we need to decide that we can make a difference too.
Arrow Activities:

  1. Define the word compassion.
  2. Learn about some of the compassionate people who have inspired Dr. Jane.
  3. Depending on the community evaluation topic you worked on, answer the following questions:

Water, Land, Air – Are there groups or individuals working in your community to help improve the quality of the water, land, and air? What are some projects that have been successful? What has made them successful and what can you learn from these successes?

Plants – Are there farms or community gardens in your area? Is there a school or university in your community that is working to learn about, preserve, and/or protect native plant species? Are there public gardens that promote community awareness of issues affecting plants? What are some projects that have been successful? What has made them successful and what can you learn from these successes?

Animals – Do you have a humane society, shelter, wildlife, rehabilitation site, or other animal welfare organization in your area? How does it operate? What are some projects that have been successful? What has made them successful and what can you learn from these successes?

People – What examples can you find in your community of people helping people? These can be very small-scale (for example, one person helping a neighbor) or involve larger organizations. What are some projects that have been successful? What has made them successful and what can you learn from these successes?

  4. As a class, choose one or two of these compassionate leaders to invite to your school so that you may learn more about these people and their projects.
  5. Complete journal entry.
