Observer: Survey of Chimpanzee Behavior

Arrow Clip 4: Social Grooming Session
  • Gremlin
  • Fifi
  • Ferdinand
  • Flirt
  • Glitter

Grooming session among Gremlin, Fifi, and Ferdinand. Sessions such as these are less common within groups of unrelated females. Gremlin (on the right) is grooming Fifi who in turn grooms Ferdinand. Typical of infants, Glitter is bored and is expressing himself through some small play gestures.

Flirt enters with what appears to be a tool of some kind, in this case being used as a toy among the infants. Glitter quickly notices this toy and her and Flirt begin to play. The toy changes hands several times among the infants during this play session. Glitter and Flirt are the same age although Flirt is a lot larger than Glitter (probably because Glitter is a twin and must share resources). The playing continues among Glitter and Flirt- at one point even appearing that Ferdinand has gained access to the toy to play.
