After four years, Jane gradually hired research assistants and later offered doctoral students research opportunities at Gombe. By 1975, there were 22 students along with Tanzanian field assistants who were trained in basic data collection. With so many people contributing, it was impractical to record data in a narrative fashion alone; the charts were very helpful for gathering information.
