Pioneer: Getting in Close
Getting in Close
The chimpanzees gradually became accustomed or "habituated" to Jane's presence. Watching through binoculars and writing everything in notebooks, she was able to piece together the overall pattern of chimpanzee life. Although Jane does not regret making contact with the chimps in the early years, it became apparent that chimpanzees are susceptible to many human diseases, such as polio and even the common cold. Consequently, humans must now stand ten meters away from the chimps when observing.
