Each morning Jane woke at 5:30 am and climbed up to an overlook she called The Peak, where she listened for the hoots and morning calls of chimpanzees. In the forest during the first few months, Jane spotted poisonous snakes, aggressive cape buffaloes, and the occasional leopard more often than she saw the chimpanzees at close range.
